For all of you history buffs, the 22nd of January marks the twentieth anniversary of Russia withdrawing from Afghanistan. I think Billy Joel said it best, "We Didn't Start the Fire." Above you'll see remnants of what the Soviets left behind.
The snow has definitely been impacting us recently. In our down time we had a snow ball fight battle royale on the FOB. The US took on the Polish with the Afghan local national workers joining as well. Team USA ultimately won by employing decisive tactics to scatter and break apart the Pol's formations. We also used more cover and high ground on a roof, while the Polish stood in the open. The Afghans switched teams often depending on who was winning at the time. Kind of how they work with the Taliban. Hmmm, maybe a microcosm of the big picture in Afghanistan. Sorry no picture of the snowball battle. I was too engaged in the fight.

Hi Drew Bear,
Sorry I decided that I'm never going to stop calling you that. We'll be leaving soon for Florida and I thought I'd check my email, your blog, etc. I'm anxious to see how much snow you get over there this winter. It's really cold here, but not much in the way of snow. I just sent you a package about 2 days ago- some things I thought you might like and the rest of what the employees had collected.
I'll give Toot Bear a hug for you.
Stay safe- as always,
Love,
Mamma Bear
Great picture- not as much snow as in Maine yet, but it's getting there. Way to dominate the snow ball fight. I hope you are staying warm. I love you!! Aud
Drew, your history lessons inspire me to do pick up some history books and do some reading. Since Jake came into our lives and now Ryan, I've probably only read one book in its entirety. Your mom would be appalled. Anyway, I hope you are enjoying your work over there and keeping warm (it was 80 degrees in San Diego last week). I just returned from a fun weekend visit to see your bro in Pensacola. Now it's back to reality as they say. BTW, were you able to view the pics I sent of the boys on Snapfish? Please let us know what you'd like in your next care package - maybe we should hold off til Feb. since it sounds like some are already on their way? I'll be checking in with Audrey soon. Take care & stay safe. Love your sis in law, Cheryl
Hi Drew,
We're thinking of you often and still like checking in on your blog. It's good to "hear" your thoughts and what you're doing over there. We had snow on MLK, Jr. Day, but not too much. Sounds like you and Audrey are the top contenders in the snowfall amounts.
Some of the Illinois Nat'l Guard in Kabal were on TV talking with President Obama during the inauguration festivities. I guess your location is a bit too remote. Take care and stay safe.
Love, Mom and Dad
Hey dude,
I'm sure you schooled everyone for the snowball fight B-) It has just been very cold here, heh of course right before it got very cold my hot tub decided to stop working.
The most snow we have gotten at one time was last weekend which made driving fun for an hour or two.
take care and stay warm
later
Andy
Hi Drew, my name is Lizz and I'm a student at CVHS ( Conestoga Valley High School ) It really suprises me that there is snow in Afghanistan! I'm glad to see you were able to have fun, although im sure it isn't always that way; you have a lot of hard work to do. I hope you make the best of your time over there! My prayers and blessings are with you!
God bless,
Lizz
