Here's an interesting photo. Taliban forces opted to blow this bridge by placing a charge on the center support column. As the PRT engineer I get to come in for repairs. Lucky. Remember, my naval background is in aviation. I have not touched an engineering book in nearly seven years. I hope the Afghans like their new toothpick and duct tape bridge. We're in the process of constructing a bypass bridge here because if we were to rebuild the bridge as it was, I'm sure they'll blow it again. That concrete slab you are looking at is prefabricated in Pakistan and not the easiest nor cheapest to get to Ghazni. Why the Taliban would want to blow up their own backyard? Your guess is as good as mine.

What a shame! It makes no sense. All you can do is try your best to make a positive difference. It must be frustrating. We think of you all the time. Stay safe.

Hi Andrew,
The Taliban are stupid. It looks like that little stream could be a much bigger river in the spring when the snow melts from the distant mountains. What kind of equipment was used to lift the heavy pre-fab bridge units when the bridge was constructed? I would guess it was part of the unit that transported it cross-country from Pakistan. Maybe there will be less of this distruction this spring...Obama is sending 17,000 additional troops, increasing the US deployment size 55%. That looks like an Army SUV in the background. Be safe in your travels.

Drew, only two more months til you get a break and can come home for a little while to see your beautiful wife. We're thinking about you and hoping you're doing okay. We went a care package in the mail last week. Love, Cheryl
Your dad said it best :) I have confidence in your engineering skills even if you haven't been to school in a while- you are pretty good at figuring things out. They are lucky to have you over there! I love you- Aud
