The Corps

Sorry Steve, I'm not referring to the USMC. The corps that I'm talking about is the United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE). In Afghanistan they are more commonly referred to as the Afghan Engineering District (AED) and I have two of the civilian representatives working for me to provide some valuable technical engineering experience. Sometimes they get the opportunity to travel out on missions with me for on site quality assurance. In this picture, I am speaking with a site engineer discussing the installation of a culvert on one of the PRT's road projects. Jimmy stands on my right interpreting for me. My AED representative, Mark, is two knuckles deep digging for some valuable gold.

I don't know if using that backhoe as a crane is safe. You might want to let them know that next time. Also that Afgan guy isn't wearing a hardhat.

I'm not here to tell these people how to do the job safely. OSHA would blow a gasket if they saw half of the construction practices of the Afghans. One company's Improvised Explosive Device (IED) clearing team consists of a dude who simply wears a face shield. He must be good because he's been doing it for 12 years and is still alive.

Hi Drew Bear,

Expect another card soon in the series. I'm wondering how hot it's getting over there with all that gear on- but keep it on! One week and Audrey will be home. I will give her a hug from you- I'm sure she'll enjoy that! You'll soon be eating Lanc. County corn and tomatoes- we're counting the days!
Stay safe, you're always in our thoughts and prayers,

Mamma Bear

On the hottest summer days I hear it gets in the mid 90's, which isn't too bad. The sun, however, is much more intense at 7200' so sunscreen is important. It can get fairly hot with all of that gear, but on the plus side my shoulders and back are getting wicked strong.

Hi Drew Bear,

I want to report that Audrey is looking great and we are about to become grandbearents (did you catch that?) as I'm sure Aud told you. We'll keep you posted on that one! You keep safe over there and get back home soon. Can't wait to celebrate with you! Oh- and let the poor kid have his bike!!
