Kids Love Me

With a baby on the way, I figure I better start practicing to be the "cool" parent. I met this group of kids while assessing a road for quality construction. Since I have arrived in Afghanistan, the children's requests have escalated from gum to pens, and now to dollars. I even had a kid ask for my watch and sun glasses. I told one of the kids I'd give him a dollar if he gave me the bike he was riding. They have trouble reacting when I ask them for something. We quickly came to an agreement of four dollars for the bike until the boy's big brother stepped in and requested 50 dollars for it. Had to walk away from that deal. These kids have a rough life. With an average male life expectancy of 41, bartering represents one of the many skills they must pick up early in order to be successful.

Those are some cute kids. It looks like the boys like you, at least, except for that one in the red plaid- he looks sort of upset. Is he the one whose bike you tried to rip off? Love you!!

A "cool" parent would let the kids pop off a few rounds from your M-4 at old coke cans and then go four-wheeling in your "Cougar". I'm just sayin'...
